Strength training is a motherhood essential

Strength training is a motherhood essential

We often talk about postpartum fitness in terms of "getting the body back" or "toning up." But let’s shift the perspective. Postpartum fitness is actually about functional capacity.

Motherhood is an athletic event.

Think about your daily movements:

  • Deadlifting a sleeping toddler out of a low crib.
  • Carrying a heavy car seat in the "crook of the arm" (a literal lunge/bicep curl combo).
  • Squatting down 50 times a day to pick up toys.
  • Wrestling a stroller into the trunk of a car.

If you aren't training for these movements, you are asking your body to perform max effort lifts every single day without a warm-up.

Why Pilates alone isn't enough (and why weights are necessary)

We love Pilates. It is the foundation of everything we teach. It gives you the "internal architecture" you need. But Pilates alone won't prepare your bones and joints for the sheer weight of a growing child.

We need Weight Training because:

  • Bone Density: Pregnancy and breastfeeding can impact bone mineral density. Lifting weights is the best way to keep your bones strong.
  • Metabolic Health: Muscle is active tissue. Building a little more muscle helps your hormones and energy levels stay balanced.
  • Confidence: There is a specific kind of mental "unlock" that happens when you realize you can lift a heavy dumbbell. That confidence carries over into how you handle the "heavy" days of parenting.

The Hybrid Approach: The best of both worlds

The magic happens when we stop choosing between "gentle" and "hard."

In our training philosophy, we use Pilates to ensure the movement is safe and the core is integrated. Then we use weights to make the movement challenging enough to create change.

You don't need to spend two hours in the gym. You need 30 minutes of intentional, hybrid movement that makes your real life feel easier.

(Always remember: this is general education, not individual medical advice. If something feels off or worrisome, loop in your healthcare provider.)
