The “Brain-Body Gap” — Why your muscles feel like they’ve forgotten how to work
Share
If you’ve tried to do a simple move—like a pelvic tilt or a glute squeeze—and felt like the signal from your brain got lost somewhere in your midsection, you’ve experienced the "postpartum gap":
- The weird sensation of "looking" at your abs and telling them to move, but nothing happens
- The feeling of being "clumsy" or tripping over your own feet more than usual
- The disconnect that makes you feel like your body is a borrowed suit that doesn’t quite fit
Maybe you've caught yourself thinking:
“I used to be so athletic. Why can’t I even feel my glutes working anymore?”
You might be trying to "force" the connection by:
- Doing more reps, hoping that eventually, you’ll "feel the burn"
- Pushing through movements even when they feel sloppy or "off"
- Watching YouTube videos of people doing complex moves and feeling like you're miles behind
…and yet, the more you push, the more disconnected you feel.
Here is the truth we want to remind you of:
Your brain has undergone as much change as your body has. Pregnancy "rewires" your motor maps to focus on the baby, not your own movement. You don't need harder exercises; you need better "wiring."
Retraining Your Internal Map
We use Pilates specifically because it is "neuromuscular" training. It isn't just about the muscle; it's about the nerve. We want to help your brain rediscover where your core and glutes are located so that when you lift a weight, your body knows exactly how to support you.
3 Ways To Close The "Gap" Today
Use Tactile Cues
Place your own hands on your lower abs while you breathe. The physical touch helps your brain "find" the muscle it's trying to talk to.
Slow Down to 50%
If you move too fast, your "old" patterns (usually your lower back) will take over. Slow the movement down until it feels almost boring—that is where the new connection is made.
Closed-Chain Movement
Try exercises where your feet or hands are pressed against a wall or the floor. That "resistance" gives your brain more data about where your body is in space.
(Always remember: this is general education, not individual medical advice. If something feels off or worrisome, loop in your healthcare provider.)
